I work a well paid job where I handle customers with upper level issues and needs, which means I sometimes have customers who have been charged a lot of money because an agent was scamming for sales. I always have to fight to get these issues resolved because the bosses hate giving money back, even if the charges were illegitimate because the agent blatantly lies to the customers about what they’re getting. I know that some of the charges are real and some customers are just angry Karens, so it’s not like I’m handing money away on a daily basis. And sometimes customers issues are solved with simple adjustments to their program or tech support and I lean in that direction as often as possible.
But my bosses get so condescending and imply that I’m an idiot when I ask to simply return funds(most of the time it is $100 or less, for a company that earns billions from legit sales and services) that were gotten through a bad sale or actual fraud. I feel like that one scene in The Incredibles where Mr. Incredible is helping the old lady with her insurance problems, which I know is going to get me fired for whatever reason they can come up with. It’s basically impossible to be an ethical person in a corporate environment, especially when directly dealing with customers. You have to smile and shrug your shoulders when they get upset that your company sold them a lie.
Anyways, I just wanted to vent. I’m already looking into getting a new job, non customer facing. It’s easier to be ignorant to others pain when you’re not facing it. I just hate that being good and caring about others is disdained in a company that promotes ‘empathy’ as one of its core values.
