So I have started to carry around a black sharpie to modify signs of businesses that say things like
“Closing early because of staff”
I typically just mark out staff and put Low Wages. Today was a different day though.
I was in the drive through of a Burger King. The workers are always great, probably the best Burger King I’ve ever been too. First window opens up and an older lady is working. She looks tired as hell. Like I felt bad going there now. I asked, how long have you been there and she said she opened. It was closing in on time to close. So we are talking a long ass day. I paid her and told her I hope she gets some rest soon. So I go to the next window and a Younger worker is there. She also looked exhausted. She apologized for the wait and said they had 4 employees total that day. She gave me my food, I then asked if her manager was there. She said yes, she’s get him from the office.
So I’m still in the drive up, waiting for him. At this point I was pretty pissed. Not at the workers, but at the bosses. They were blaming staff, overworking staff, and likely underpaying staff. He came to the window and I asked him about the job they had and what it paid. He told me $12 an hour. I said, “Well thats your problem”. And right in front of the worker I said, Five Guys up the road is paying $19 an hour starting. I’m surprised your remaining employees haven’t quit.
I then left. I hope the other workers got the hint and quit. As customers we shouldn’t tolerate bosses shaming employees. We also should expect our money to be spread appropriately across employees.
