There have been some signs in the past that my father is a bootlicker to mass corporations: loving law enforcement when they’re not poc and/or a woman, a severe hatred towards minimum wage workers, and just flat out berating my brother and I for not working 24/7, whether it be school or work. However today he said that he always pays for hotel rooms on business trips.
That in itself might seem like an inconvenience, since the company he would be working for at the time should be compensating him for his time and effort of traveling for work, yet he revealed that he VOLUNTARILY chose to not accept the living spaces offered by these companies or any reimbursement for the hotels he stayed at. For trips that he chose to go on, not required. My father primarily traveled for work when my brother and I were kids; he was 7-8 and I was 10 when he decided to stop traveling and be somewhat at home.
He had worked for two different companies during this time period, both having laid him off later. He worked for Sun Microsystems (he had worked for them previously before they laid him off the first time, the second time was when they were absorbed by Oracle) and a separate tech company (that laid him off a couple years after hiring him) as a senior engineer. Both positions came with decent benefits and a decent pay. He and my family were not struggling financially at the time. Both companies would not have fired him for choosing not to travel for work.
Him staying eventually led to my parents divorce and my family’s realization that this man is a shitty person in general. How he has avoided jail time is beyond me. Bottom line, his choice to travel for work fucked up all of the relationships with his family to the point that if his work wasn’t paying for our living, he’d be a deadbeat dad.
But what really pissed me off today wasn’t the fact he chose his millionaire company that could give a rat’s ass about him over his family, but the fact that he treats a fucking company better than his own family. To say that I am embarrassed to have a father like him is an understatement.
