So I’ve been with the same company since years before COVID and now we’re 100% remote. Previously I’d just catch my manager when they seemed free and drop the news.
Now I don’t even know how to handle it. Send an email? I’ve thought of many subject lines ranging from there being no doubt what the email is about to slightly comical ice breakers.
Send a message? My manager and I have a good relationship and usually just shoot the shit after we talk a little business during our monthly touch bases; we were friends before he moved into management so we still have that bond even though I ended up reporting to him. I knew I would be leaving when we talked earlier this week but hadn’t been cleared yet so I just stuck to the playbook. Now I’m cleared and they can’t change my mind.
The third option is to send a message and ask to get on a quick call today — there are a couple work items I need to talk to him about, an appointment I’ll be out for next week, etc., that I could use to break the ice on the subject because the appointment is for mental health issues brought on by this industry (not necessarily the company); he’s aware of the issues already so it’s not like a big surprise.
Gut says paper trail after everything I’ve seen here but I can’t imagine anything he or they could/would do that I’d need protection from. It’s pretty simple, I’m leaving and even matching my new salary + 20k wouldn’t keep me.
Phone call feels easier and more personal. If I hated the dude I would just email and wait for the panic response. Seems odd to be having an anxiety attack about quitting but here I am
