I’m angry, I’m feeling so scared right now.
My mother has been working in this company for over 7 months as a supervisor, and a co-worker of her just died because of an embolism, a brain stroke caused by stress.
This woman was a single mother of a 18 year old kid. As my mother, she was a supervisor for a sales team on a big company.
This company is a resort in my local area that always had a reputation of “overworking its employees in exchange of great wages.”
But what are great wages when you have to work 12-13 hours with only one day off?
I’ve seen my own mother come home crying from stress, tired as hell, angry at everything. And now, this woman that pretty much did the same thing died. She began with a headache, then felt dizzy, asked for a restroom break and was found unconscious by another employee.
Her son, oblivious to this, got the news that her mother died when finishing his last class in college, three hours after she was announced dead. That poor kid spent three fucking hours at school without knowing his mother fucking died.
They called a meeting and the managers simply said “it was probably bc of issues at home.” We all know that’s not true.
And know I’m feeling so fucking scared. I’m 26, i have my own job, but I’ve seen my mother so tired because of this job, getting constantly sick, and now I’m afraid.
Her company is one of the best paying in the area, but with this quitting tendency and smaller work-teams, stress has risen significantly.
I literally cried to beg her to disobey if she feels she can’t handle it anymore. But this situation felt so close to home that I’m inevitably disturbed.
I also feel extremely bad for that 18 yo kid.
No worker should face this fate in an attempt to achieve a descent lifestyle.
