Why do people act like some careers such as being a doctor or lawyer are so much better than say those who work retail or flip burgers?
Guess what. You go to school to be a doctor or lawyer for all those years, then get to deal with bullshit just like l everyone else does. Complaints, long hours, stress. Every career has is, even entrepreneurs do.
I work retail as an assistant manager and don’t really like my job. I’m good at it and I like my employees, but I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t getting paid. My dream job is opening up a book store, but that will probably never happen due to how expensive it is, Amazon killing most independent bookstores, and that you just won’t make a living doing that.
I work so I can afford to live. That’s all. Isn’t that what we’re all doing? It’s bullshit. I was considering quitting my job and finally going to college so I could be a teacher, thinking that the summers off would make it worth it. Then I read about how much shit they go through and the mass multitude of bs. All that money just to do something else where I’m stressed? I don’t think so. Then I pondered accounting. I said: “well at least I’d be making more money, oh wait.” You make more money, but work incredibly long boring hours fixing peoples corporate problems and never having time to enjoy all that money. I’d rather work retail.
At this point, I’m starting to realize something. (Mind you this does not have to do with trades or specialized careers like doctors)
From reading so many Reddit posts, talking to people at work, seeing family, guess what? Even if you have a good degree, you don’t have a very good chance of making a lot of money unless you have connections.
AKA, unless mommy and daddy are BFF’s with the CEO, your chance of getting a high paying job are extremely low.
Look at all these business majors making $19 an hour with their degree. I’m an assistant manager at a retail store and make $22 with no degree at 19 because I got lucky with the COVID staffing shortages. There’s something wrong with that picture.
The point is, a job is a job. And they all suck. A lot of degree-less waitresses at a popular restaurant make more than people with fancy jobs and degrees do.
We’re all going to need roommates. Forever.
I don’t know if there’s anyone else like me out there, where you feel like the answer to happiness and the end to your depression is a ‘career’ where you make more money and somewhat enjoy it. Well it’s not. The grass is not always greener on the other side, and with work? It really isn’t.
