Obligatory statement of long time lurker, on mobile, etc. Just wanted to share some good news for once.
Graduated from grad school right at the time everything in the US was shutting down due to “you know what.” I was unemployed for a few months until a job finally came along and I was ecstatic to earn even the smallest income. Little did I know what I was getting into. I was hired by CVS (to help with the Minute Clinic) and boy what a terrible fucking company they are. When I rightfully complained to the managers about horrendously unsafe working conditions and humbly provided opportunities for improvement, I was promptly told to, “Know my place.” That’s quoted word for word. As long as THEY were making money, they didn’t give a shit about their employees wellbeing.
Well, I’d had enough of that bullshit after a few months so I quit. Best decision of my life so far even though I was far from what you’d consider financially stable. It wasn’t worth it for me to stay. This started an immediate cascade of about 4-5 other employees walking as well from the same store for new jobs. I couldn’t be happier for everyone that got away from that absolute shithole of a company.
As for me, I was fortunate to land an amazing job at a Fortune 500 company where my opinions for improvement are not only listened to, but highly encouraged and rewarded. I guess the moral of this long winded story is things can get better and there are companies out there worth working for. Never settle for a job that is demeaning, makes you feel worthless, or pays you so little for putting up with so much that you have to sell your soul just to get by. Something else is always waiting, and that something could be so much better.
