I realized today how stories of what Musk is doing with Twitter function as a “well, at least we're not as bad as they are!” lesson for other companies. In other words, our workplace isn't so bad compared to a company which mandates that you come in to the office, but isn't paying for janitorial staff, so you have to bring your own toilet paper.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, so I don't believe this is an intentional thing: I don't believe that Musk tanking Twitter was done precisely to make other companies look good. It seems far more likely that Musk is just a bad CEO, who is mostly into self-promotion, and micromanages at nightmare levels.
Bottom line: Don't let “We're doing better than people at company X” be an excuse for accepting poor treatment where you work. You are human and deserve decent treatment anywhere.
