To add context, my boss is my family member, but the owner acts like the supreme leader running around like a chicken with his head cut off. This is exactly what “quiet hiring” is.
So I work in administration, data entry, some payroll, special projects, doing work running random errands that don’t necessarily have to do with the main operations. Also have an office manager, I really good coworker of mine, except he has a specific job description, so that’s where I come in to fill in a lot of the holes because he doesn’t wanna do things outside of what he actually applied and got hired for. However that has changed a lot in the past month, and both him and I are looking for new jobs. But what’s hilarious is that he has started to be given the work that I was previously doing because I say yes to everything. And him and I talked about this, so it’s like this obvious knowledge between him and I That he is being assigned more things and I am being assigned less. Aka “quiet firing”
Well my boss, my family member, had a conversation with me saying you know “the owner is not happy with xyz and downsizing because of economy/cash flow he wants you out” aka being laid off… again I do a lot of random stuff, not direct operations, but it still needs to be done by someone. Also I am in the middle of some “projects” but they have no timeline, like selling random items we don’t need anymore.
Well now here I am, and at the end of the conversation they were like well you know I know you’re looking, so I still wanna get you the next pay period so your last day is February 10. I will say I am very happy that that’s the situation, also I know it’s not perfect because it’s my family member who doesn’t put any personal weight into this happening, neither do I I literally told her thank you I am so happy. Because we both know this is all really dumb and the owner micromanaging.
More companies should do this, because even though I won’t have a job by the end of next week, I was given a grace period. Also I have Uber/lyft for over 6 years off an on, made more money doing it too, I was just trying to have a “real job”…. Well there goes 2.5 years of being a “go getter, giving my advice and knowledge, hiring 40% of the staff” for 21/ hours, zero benefits. Owner “we have a lot to offer here”
Do I still get UE though? Would love to know
