I had a conversation with my manager at work and he said to me “could you at least look at me in the eye when you’re talking to me?” And kinda rolled his eyes and huffed. I have autism and have difficulty with eye contact, so I was looking at the floor and occasionally looking at him. Eye contact is one of my main difficulties with my autism and I get EXTREMELY uncomfortable looking people in the eye and become very socially awkward. I felt sort of discriminated so I called the associate service center (basically HR department) and complained. The woman told me she would call my area manager (the woman in charge of my general manager). I received a call from my area manager a few days later and she told me if I wasn’t looking her in the eye she wouldn’t done the exact same thing he did. She then told me not to call HR again and to go directly to her if there was an issue. Now I feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable considering I’m now working under 2 people who are treating me poorly. I don’t really know what to do. Is this considered ableism? Should I call HR again? Should I call a lawyer? Call labor services? Any advice would be appreciated.
