So I am due to graduate this year and have been applying to graduate schemes. I was successful with a company in the energy sector and accepted the job offer.
This led to pre-employment checks being done by Security Watchdog. The background checks have not been completed, however, this morning I received a phone call from the company to say I failed a reference check and that the job offer has been withdrawn. When I asked for a reason they refused to elaborate and advised me to contact Security Watchdog. Security Watchdog have advised that they can't disclose any information and have told me to contact the company for the reason.
I have undergone background checks several times in the past and passed with no problem (including in the financial sector). I have a speeding offense from 6 years ago and some credit card debt but besides that I can't think of anything that would look bad on my record.
For the life of me I have no idea how I could have failed the background check. I also feel incredibly frustrated because graduate scheme applications are grueling and I thought I was done.
Is there anything I can do?
Does anyone know what could have caused this?
