So, made a throwaway for this. Husband works for a large, very large worldwide company who don't exactly have the best practices. Some issues have arisen, and I will keep it short as possible. The state we are in insists on 10 hours minimum between shifts, that doesn't always happen and he is put on shifts where he has less than this sometimes. There's screenshot evidence of it through the work app, we have that. So, that's illegal which is great. That actually isn't really the main issue and I can't believe I have to actually type this. His mother passed away, when it happened he and other family went to her home in a different state, all unpaid time off work. Her funeral was set for another date. So, prior to the funeral he worked 2 weeks in a row of 6 days straight with 1 day off. Then he was told, literally told he could not have his weekend off to go to his MOTHER'S FUNERAL unless he worked 7 straight days in a row. SO he did because it didn't even occur to any of us that you know, bereavement leave would be a thing, heads were preoccupied. She literally said he could not go to his mother's funeral otherwise. 16 hours of driving was done in 2 days, had to leave the grave 20 mins after the service just so he could leave and wouldn't be penalized at work.
We've looked into this. Bereavement leave is 2 days paid, off. Along with the weekend. If out of state then 4 days, and also weekend that week. He did not have that. Any of it.
Long story short official complaint was made, being passed from pillar to post and the reply he just received was basically 'oh this is an issue for the DM, they'll sort it'. DM and his boss seem to be friends out of work anyway, and how do you even sort something like this?
We are looking into pro bono lawyers but I'm not even sure if they could help. They literally broke the state law with time between shifts occasionally, but the utterly egregious part is his boss refusing to even tell him about bereavement leave and making him work, saying he couldn't go to his own mother's funeral unless he did the next 7 straight days. And not, he is not salaried he is hourly. Anyone could have worked those days but no, it HAD to be him. Also, since this boss started people are leaving in droves because of them.
Sorry if this is all a bit incoherent. I just honestly don't know of any good steps we should take so if anyone has ideas PLEASE let me know.
Also if needed, we are in WA state.
