Alone in hospital for 2 weeks because husband has no paid leave

Quick rant: I'm seriously ill, and I've been in a hospital 2 hours from home for 13 days, so no quick popping by when there's a free minute. Keep in mind my husband switched jobs last year, and this one is somehow a step up. I've seen him once in this whole time because his job has no paid vacation, no sick pay, no paid leave of any kind. We can't afford for him to not work. I am recovering from surgery alone, I'm going through ugly complications alone, and it's all because employers are allowed to not offer such basic, vital things. His boss has made it clear if he needs to take off in the middle of something that's totally fine, he can take time off with no warning during this. How do so many people accept this BS as normal and feel no need to change it?
