Although sad about the situation I love the employees response

Today an employee informed us she would be late. This employee is late quite a bit but it is due to her mother's illness and train issues (all verified via MTAs own site) Today unfortunately her mom passed away, and to escape the house (against my wishes) she came in to support her team. The HR Director wasn't happy with her being late and upon her coming in came down on her and her response was perfect. HR Director: Late again per usual. Employee: I am sorry I had an emergency. HRD: Of course you did, what is it this time? Stalled train? Emergency Brake? What excuse will you reuse? E: Actually I informed you of my mothers illness some time ago. Today she passed away but no worries she can only die once so you won't hear that excuse again. May I clock in? HRD: Oh I am sorry…is…

Employee: I am sorry I had an emergency.

HRD: Oh I am sorry…is there anything I can do?
E: You said enough but thanks for the kind words.
