Always through messages

Y’know growing up adults would say “it’s better to call”, but as I work more I realize it’s pretty much always better to text or message your bosses through an app, so you have everything they say in writing. I’ve realized my boss likes making people call him/spam calls everyone when they’re off the clock (we’re all part time) because he doesn’t want anything in writing since he constantly contradicts himself and promises bullshit. Edit: I’m part time and hourly so whenever I get the “hey can you give me a call?” while I’m OFF THE CLOCK I ignore. Does anyone know if it’s illegal to constantly change part timers’ schedules and routinely try to contact them when they’re not clocked in?
