An old story but I remember it from time to time…..

A relative of mine was murdered. I found out by a phone call at work. I was hysterical. My line manager's first words were, “I'm no being funny, but did your not die last month”, like I was only allowed one (it wasn't a parent). I was off for maybe a week. I tried to come in once, had hysterics in the tea room and went home. There was a lot off huffing about that. I was told I had to take annual leave to cover my absence as the relative wasn't close enough to warrant bereavement leave, and they couldn't give me special leave because, and I quote, “someone's kid was sick and we made them take annual leave to cover it”. Because sick child = murder. They eventually caved and gave me special leave – I can only assume someone said, ooooh what might this look like in…
