Any truth to the saying “A company is failing due to the amount of conference calls they have”?

I work for this company that was bought out by another company about two years ago. Before the purchase we never had or rarely had company meetings. Ever since the company was purchased the new company mandated we must have a meeting every week one day out of the week.
