Anyone experience BS with Matrix Absence Management?

A specialist MD has recommended that I go on FMLA during treatment for an injury. My boss is fine with it but I have to use Matrix, an outside company who manages FMLA, short and long term disability. I thought disability insurance was for situations like this but apparently a doctor’s judgment can be disregarded? WTF? I’ve missed very little work over the years (almost 2 decades) and now that I need some time to recover I’m being treated like a liar? This one of the many reasons why I’m looking to retire early.
