Anyone experienced as a contractor in a school district?

I started a job this year as a Food service director for a school district. The intention was to line my schedule up with my kids so we could avoid sending them to camps and what not. Over thanksgiving break I was barraged with emails/calls and was asked to list what I was accomplishing while school was on break so it can be reported to the svp. I ended up working several days over that “break”. It is now the start of Christmas break and I find my schedule already filling up without notice and I may only have 2 or 3 days without any obligations. I checked our employee manual and it makes no mention of how time off works so I guess i am at their mercy. Does anyone out there have any experience with this kind of situation?
