While interviewing for a job recently, I asked about car break-ins and thefts, considering the sketchy nature of the neighborhood. That prompted the business owner to go off on this crazy rant, beginning with “I don't know your politics, but I'd guess we have similar views….” and he proceeded to go off about how slavery wasn't the big thing history makes it out to be and that it was never a racial thing, there have been plenty of white slaves through history and there were blacks who owned slaves in the south and it's just the the left pushing the the anti slavery rhetoric in an effort to get a big handout in the form of reparations.
A little stunned, I just said that I prefer to keep politics and work separate and did what I could to end the interview. The next day, I called and declined the job. He said: “if it's about politics, well, you brought it up…”. I had just asked about theft in the parking lot..
It made me think how badly out of whack the power balance between employees and employers has become if this guy thinks it's acceptable to bring up politics during an interview, not to mention the crazy-ass shit he was peddling.
