Application process = rolling dice?

About 3 months and 96 applications into the process now (I just finished my master's in business). Just need to vent for once, usually a lurker on this sub. I more and more have the feeling that recruiters are literally rolling dice on whether they invite applicants to an interview/test/whateverthefuck. The position that sparked this thought was one I applied for and later found out a friend of mine who is the same person on paper (except for better high school grades, which shouldn't matter after finishing a fucking master's degree) did the same. He was invited to the whole ordeal and has a different position in that company now – I just received my lovely standardized rejection. All I replied was “”. I can't even be mad anymore, it's just funny to me at this point.
