Are there movements to address the artificial housing crises in the US?

I have to move, and I'm learning just how badly property management companies have screwed everyone, now. Only a year ago, finding a place was far easier than it is, now. But now, homelessness is very much on the rise while everyone is being priced out of homes, or just doesn't have the credit score for it. I don't live in a place with an incredibly high population density- just a major Midwestern city. It's usually more than doable to find a place within a week of beginning your search. But now, it's just gone crazy. Does anyone know if there are any activist groups in the US, for this? We're already being priced out of food and transportation costs. Now people are being forced onto the street even worse than before, for some greedy animal's get-rich-quick scheme? When everyone's basic needs are no longer affordable, I see a snapping…

When everyone's basic needs are no longer affordable, I see a snapping of the public consciousness in our future.

But if anyone can show me where to start, I'd appreciate it.
