I had been working in a service based company for almost a year before I got a much better offer that gave me a 100% hike. My manager at the previous firm knew how much I added to each project I was assigned to and always made me over work because there were very few people with skill set I had at that time in the team. So when I get the counter offer his assistant calls me and asks why I'm leaving. I cited that they make me work 12 hours a day (on paper they officially work for 9+1 hours a day which itself is a lot) and the pay. What he says next is something that will trigger probably even on this sub. He told me I should be grateful I'm getting to work a niche skill set and long work hours is fine for my age since I'm just 24 and that money isn't everything. He told me people get wages half of what I was getting there at that time (wayyyyyyyy below minimum wages) and that I should be happy with the package I was getting at the time. I literally wanted to yell at him but I didn't want to burn bridges. After that the main dude calls me with this asshole on line too and tells me the kinda growth I'm getting at my new company is very unprecedented and it won't be good for my career and that a slow and I should be patient about money. Needless to say I didn't give two fucks about what he said and I just left the company.
The way these assholes try to sweet talk you out of every scenario and make you stay back is just plain evil. I know a lot of people who would've fallen for their sweet talk and they would've stayed back thinking everything they said was true. If you're at a position like my previous manager at least do not try to be a jerk and let the person go for whatever is better for his life.
Sorry for the long rant.
