Watching a phone, I wasn’t allowed to answer

In my early 20's, after getting out of the Army, I got a job at a helicopter manufacturer. My job was to sit in a locked office that overlooked where they sent out the completed helicopters. There was a phone there that I was responsible for never answering. It was a regulation or contractual requirement (I was never sure which) that someone had to be by the phone during business hours but didn't require that someone had to answer it. It was answered, of course, by a secretary who sat on the other side of the locked door and who also signed me in and out. It was boring. On the first day, I read a book from the little bookshelf (it was a Harlequin romance). After that (this was before pre-personal computers) I brought in my own books. It was boring but I made $8.50 an hour for guaranteed…

I have a master’s degree and I work at a dive bar.

In the last month my lowest paying shift was $119($17/hr) and highest was $576($64/hr).  I have ADHD and CPTSD. It is very difficult for me to work full time and manage my mental health. I burn out, panic, and shut down. Working part time at something with minimal stress is the most sustainable option for me. I work part time (13-28hr/wk) and I survive. My whole life people have talked about my POTENTIAL, all these great things I could be, could have been. It hurts when people see my intelligence and creativity, expect more with no regard for my happiness or well being, and then are disappointed and cold when I can't perform. I'm a loser, I'm wasting my potential, and I'm okay with that if it means I can sustain a relatively happy and low stress life.  I'm in therapy, I'll be okay. Just felt like screaming into the…

Trolling and Karma Farming on antiwork

This subreddit has been a target for troll accounts and/or karma farming. Every day there are posts and reposts from new accounts with a storm of upvotes and guilds in a way that is both highly unusual and suspicious. Take for example this post: The second post this user account ever made has 66k upvotes and 12 awards. It's a repost. Additionally, the user forgot to switch accounts and commented as if they were a different user, tipping their hand. Although whatever karma Farm they used seem to drown that out. https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/u5oauo/they_couldnt_care_less_because_they_dont_care_at/ Or this post from a 14 day old account that has 61k upvotes and 13 awards: https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/u4chn7/i_agree/ Or this post from a month old account with 41k upvotes and 17 guilds. https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/u2qkhe/you_can_work_remotely_after_5pm/ Or check any number of posts from the user that has a half dozen accounts with the word 'birdman' In it. The user posts nearly every…

I Need Some Perspective

I want to start out this post as saying that one, i believe in trying to have workers rights, less work, more pay and the basis of what anti work is about… And two, this is something thats been on my mind for a while and might be a bit long. So I am a trucker. I have had my CDL for about 6 to 7 years now, have worked with 4 companies doing all types of trucking jobs, for all kinds of pay in all situations….etc, you get the point. I enjoy my work. I feel i have to say that. It was the first time that i felt accepted in “normal” society (im of the mind that most truckers are the weirdos of the weirdos), and enjoy the friendships and work that i do and have created along the way. I also understand that a lot of people…

“Wonderful” parents

For all of you guys with those “wonderful” parents who want the best for you in career/life… what a crock of shit. None of us asked to be here. None of us signed a waiver to consent to experience this circus of pain. BuT THeRe’s GoOd MomEnTs tOo, they’ll say. Why do we have to experience hundreds of groin-punches before we finally get that weak sloppy kiss on the cheek? Did they think we’d grow to be masochists for our abusive employers? And best yet, they want us to start working with deep debt because of college. All for the incredible opportunity to be underpaid and overworked. If you detest to any of the these circumstances, which you will, then I guess you're just depressed. Here take some trazodone and be on your way. Hell, it seems that the best thing our parents could’ve done for us is one simple,…

Sharing my own story

So, inspired by all the other personal work stories on the sub, I thought I'd share what happened to me at my own workplace when I was doing an internship. A little backstory: the polytechnic I attended required students to take an internship in between second and third year. If you dont do it, you don't graduate. I was given a list of companies to choose from, and I chose one company I'll call JT. When I started at JT, the owner whom I'll dub Helen told me if I wasn't given anything to do, I should ask around. Fair enough, except even after asking around nobody would give me anything to do. I got told off for using my phone since, you know, nothing to do. On occasions when I was given things to do, they complained when I took too long even though I was new to the…
