Back pay?

In a union when a new contract is being negotiated employees will receive back pay under the concept that they have been working under the new contract while it was being negotiated. If someone is fired during negotiations and their area received a pay raise when the contract was finalized would they still be entitled to the back pay from hours worked when they were employed?
