I posted on r/plussize, but they recommended here as well.
I applied for a cashier position for a Catholic based charity thrift store. I was hired, then asked to come back a few weeks later because now the position was backroom organizing and pricing clothes and back up on cashier. I said I could try because at this point I needed money.
I start working and pretty quickly they start putting me on register. I would ask every day where I was going to be and they said register. I never trained too much on backroom so the rare days I'd be back there I was slow and didn't understand the system or pricing.
They offered me a job working with the charity side helping people. I was so excited and was told I would be transferred as soon as they hired my replacement.
The day they hired my replacement, they fired me and told me the promotion couldn't happen. They said because I was hired for backroom and I was up front I wasn't performing my duties. They cited the fact that I sat in a chair at the register (a chair they put behind me one day and so I assumed they wanted me to sit?) And that wasn't “a good look”. The reason I was denied the other job I was promised? It was actually unloading trucks for the food pantry and even though I had done it for them before they didn't think I was healthy enough to do it every day. Some office job.
I am blaming myself because I am back job hunting and am so angry I was told to sign something while I cried uncontrollably telling them I am going to be homeless. I trusted them. I had zero indication I was doing wrong. I was never warned or spoken to.
I'm in a right to work state so please don't tell me I have a case to sue. There was no HR. It's run by the Catholic board. No I'm not Catholic.
