I got a government job about 6 months ago. For years people kept telling me that government jobs have amazing benefits, the best benefits. So when I started my new government job I was pretty floored to find out we only get 4-HOURS of sick-leave a month. We don’t get any PTO or Vacation days until we’ve worked a full-year. So basically I’m screwed if I need a day off or get sick. I already use my 4-hours of sick-leave every month, and usually go over, so I can go to doctor’s appointments, since I work M-F and work during the hours all doctors offices are open.
I have a medical procedure in a few weeks I have to be out of work for and that means I’m losing pay because they won’t give me decent sick-leave and refuse to give PTO and vacation hours to me yet. It’s VERY stressful because just missing 1-day of work will be a massive hit to my paycheck.
Before this, I worked at a theme park and had significantly better benefits. So I’m pretty miffed about the lie that government jobs “have such amazing benefits”. The ONLY silver lining is that when I get my PTO/Vacation hours I’ll get them as a lump sum.
