Blatant Exploitation

My (Canadian) province's minimum wage is $15.25/hr. This private language school in my city has not raised its starting wage, $17.00/hr, since before the pandemic, despite rampant inflation and wage theft. Teachers are mostly only paid for classroom instruction; however prep, corrections and feedback are all considered teacher responsibilities. With this in mind, the pay ends up being below minimum wage, and yet Glassdoor categorizes them as high-paying. Complaints to federal, provincial, and municipal gov't representatives are all brushed aside, and labour standards are not enforced. The media cannot be bothered. The owners of these schools usually target vulnerable immigrants for employment as they are less likely to rock the boat as their visas are often tied to their employment or they are less familiar with the country's labour laws. But I'm sure the owners are happy knowing the Canadian gov't is increasing immigration so they'll have fresh vulnerable people to exploit. When I bring this up many people around me get uncomfortable. Canadians don't like real conversations about immigration policy.
