Boss Gave Us A Test

I work in Texas, if that makes a difference, in a highly professional capacity. Around mid-January, my new manager (I have been working under him for ~7mo) sprang a completely random test on myself, and three other colleagues. The test was over our general knowledge of our positions to sort of 'understand' where we are at with our knowledge of things. Mind you, the other two people have been with the company for about 2yrs. While the 4th person was just hired on a month prior. We were given no warning.

The results of the test were used to tell us that we don't know how to do our jobs and that we should be better (mind you, I am relatively new to the area and job function) at it. Shortly after this test was given, a large portion of my co-worker's and I responsibilities were drastically reduced and spread across other teams.

I personally believe this was borderline un-ethical and straight-up demeaning to me and the other team members involved. What I'd like to ask the general audience here is, would I have a leg to stand on if I approach my HR about this? I can't find anything specific about this within our policies, but I also don't know if it even exists. I would assume it would be under our training policies, but I have not checked those, yet.
