so i recently got a new job as a server at a restaurant. i’ve been working there for about 3 weeks now and have been doing very well. i usually get above 20% tips and always get good reviews from my tables. well, recently, i got a very bad table… a table i would like to call the (karen table). i could tell right off the bat that these people were going to be a problem when i went up to their table and introduced myself. they had immediately cut me off and didn’t even let me finish my sentence. the karen lady goes, “ya, so we will have drinks and i want extra ice, and we are ready to order…” they all started saying their orders very fast and excepted me to just write everything down in a second. i mean… we are talking super speed talking, not even pause between each person to let me write down their order. (and keep in mind, i’m still a new server…) so i asked politely if they could repeat their order, just so i made sure i got their order right. they started sighing and repeated it for me, already acting like it was a big deal. but again, i kept a smile on my face and told them thank you so much, i will be back with your drinks. so i go over to the computer and put their drinks in the system. i quickly went over to my other table and made sure they were still doing well. i looked over at the bar and saw that the bar tender had still not made the karen table’s drinks. but it was a friday and i knew that the bar was pretty busy, so obviously it was going to be a while. i walk over to the karen table and give them their waters, and before i could even say anything about their drinks, they immediately start raising their voice at me. the karen lady yelled, “we have been waiting here 20 minutes for our drinks!!” (it was not 20 minutes.. try 5) I do not want my water before I get my drink.” i then reply and say, “I’m so sorry, the bar is a little bit busy right now, but those drinks will be out shortly.” “she then yells at me and points at the bar saying, “the bar is not busy, nobody is there!” but when i looked over, the bar was clearly packed. I then try and talk to her and calm her down, but then she looks at me and goes, “how long have you been working here?!” I then try to tell her but she cuts me off immediately and says, “not long enough.” the other people at her table started chiming in and agreeing with her. i then reply and say, “please do not be rude to me, I am only human.” she then said, “i don’t care.” i’m already very hurt and upset at this point, and I say, “I’m only trying to help you guys out, would you like any appetizers while you wait?” she then smirks and says, “we already ordered.” so i walk away and my coworker takes the table for me because they said they wanted a new server. my manager came up to me and asked what had happened. I told him the whole story and he apologized to me for their behavior, and reaffirmed to me that I was doing a good job. after that table, it really affected my night and I started crying. but i got myself together and just sucked it up for the rest of the night. I also closed the restaurant. well, the next day, I get a text message from my manager and he says that he removed me off the schedule for the week and that he needed to talk to me about what had happened last night. (The situation with the Karen table). in his text message he told me that he would call me in a second. I start waiting around for his call and then hours pass with no response. I decided to call him an hour later, but he never answered his phone. he then texted me after the second time I called him and said he was busy, that he would call me when he got the chance. at this point, I’m very anxious and confused as to why I’m not working anymore for the week. I wait for the entire day and still don’t get a call from him. it becomes night time and I decided just to go to bed. I wake up the next day and guess what, there was still no call from my manager. at this point I’m very upset and mad, so I text him telling him that he had basically left me waiting to hear from him and did not even bother to call me. I told him that I did not want to wait around anymore and asked him what is going on. well, he still decides not to respond to me and it’s been hours after I sent him that message. I just called the restaurant about 6 hours ago and spoke to my other manager, telling him what is going on. he just told me that he would talk to the other manager and let me know what is going on. surprise, surprise, I still have not heard anything from either one of my managers. i’m very upset and worried, i’m not sure what to do. I truly believe this had something to do with the Karen table, because the Karen table is friends with the owner. I just think it would be very unfair if I got fired over having a bad table. i was really relying on making money this week and now they’re not even letting me work without any explanation. I feel like this is very unfair to me and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the next steps I should take in this situation?
