Boss is saying it’s required that I attend an event.

I work in management for a fast food chain. Every year they hold Family Day and all the managers in the region meet up to shake each other's hands and stroke each other's egos. It's always out of state and they pay for a hotel room for one night. I've managed to get out of going since I've been a manager but last year my district manager told me that I can't miss it again. So they announced the date and location for it and it's on a weekend that my s/o has a class he has to attend (that he paid for). We only have the one vehicle between the two of us and I can't take it cause he's going to need it. That and being as he is my only family I don't want to attend “family day” without him. I'm going to have to tell my dm that I can't make it and idk what he's going to do about it. Can he really require that I go?
