I work as a bartender and axe coach at an axe throwing place/restaurant in Florida. The work could be really fun, but the owner micromanages, and splits tips earned by 2 people among 5-8, doesn't pay overtime, and a few other illegal things. I have already filed a complaint with the DoL.
Yesterday, he told me that my pay is being reduced from my starting wage of 13 dollars an hour, to 11 dollars an hour. This is apparently happening across the board and other people are being let go, so this is not in retaliation for the DoL complaint or complaints made to my manager as far as I can tell. When I got hired, I was given a notice that said I had to work for 90 days before I would be eligible for unemployment. I started work on November 28. I would like to at least get unemployment out of this…
Any advice on how to handle this? My thoughts are to send a message before my next shift, stating that I do not consent to my pay being lowered and that I will continue to work as scheduled for the originally agreed upon 13 dollars an hour. If this is not acceptable, I require a written notice of termination.
