I (24y male) work in New York at a restaurant supply. This week, I worked a short extra shift, but had to leave halfway through another shift and called out the next shift due to illness and shortness of breath. I normally never call out (the last time was when I broke my leg 2 years ago skateboarding. I still showed up for my shift but my boss closed the shop so he could drive me to the urgent care when he saw I could barely walk. Didn't know it was broken until then) but this was pretty bad. I was so congested I felt like I was drowning, and I got very confused and kept forgetting what I was doing in the middle of a task. I was two hours short of full time, 4 hours short of my norm.
Well, my boss deducted 12 hr of my pto and basically said, “you're short this week, so too bad” after I asked if it was necessary to take pto at all. The employee handbook says we can take pto in any increment. He did it just before finalizing payroll, too, which makes it a pain to change, even if he were willing to.
I've been at this company for six years and I normally love it despite the meh pay and benefits, but I'm livid over this. I understand taking the value of what I missed, but I worked extra this week. I can make back lost money, but I can't make back lost time. Now my pto request for June has been changed to denied after initially being approved since I am short pto hours. I was going to Arizona to celebrate my dad's 50th. It was going to be the first time the whole family could be together since pre-covid.
My boss is normally so good to me. I guess I feel betrayed more than anything else.
