boss won’t respect the hours i am unable work. what can i do?

i hope this is the right subreddit, i’ve never come to the internet for something like this before. if not, maybe some of you can direct me to the right place to ask. some backstory to be clear; ive worked at a franchised fast food location for the past 2 1/2 years, and as of this past year i decided to go to college. i am 20 if that matters and this was my first job (am now a shift manager). at my job only managers are allowed to close front, but any team member can close the kitchen. this is relevant as we only have 2 shift managers (myself included) currently due to one of us quitting and no one being hired in her place. we are open until midnight. this is only my second semester back in school but i am a full time student. i made this…

i hope this is the right subreddit, i’ve never come to the internet for something like this before. if not, maybe some of you can direct me to the right place to ask. some backstory to be clear; ive worked at a franchised fast food location for the past 2 1/2 years, and as of this past year i decided to go to college. i am 20 if that matters and this was my first job (am now a shift manager). at my job only managers are allowed to close front, but any team member can close the kitchen. this is relevant as we only have 2 shift managers (myself included) currently due to one of us quitting and no one being hired in her place. we are open until midnight.

this is only my second semester back in school but i am a full time student. i made this very clear to my boss and gave her my schedule clearly — two days of the week being unavailable, as my classes start at 8 am, and i’m on campus and in classes until 5:15 pm. i told her i could not work these days, she is typically very flexible when it comes to scheduling. that being said.

my other coworker, the manager who can close, has a family thing my first day of classes. this is where my issue is; i have to get up at 5:30 am so i can be on campus early enough to figure out where my classes are and get to them. knowing this, my boss scheduled me to close anyway, so now i have an eighteen hour day on my first day of classes, and don’t even have a day off until the next week. i plan on going through with the shift just this once since the schedule has already been posted, but i don’t know how to approach this issue professionally with my boss and have her actually understand that it wasn’t a suggestion, and that i can’t work those hours again. i want to apply myself in school too, but i can’t if i’m too burnt out from work to even do my assignments. does anyone have any advice for dealing with a boss that doesn’t respect your schedule?
