Was working at this Caffe restaurant for a couple years, it was casual, but sketchy as fuck.
Australian laws require employers to pay super, and the casual rate is meant to be $25 minimum. Somehow the owner wasn't giving anyone super and most people were getting under $25. Also we served alcohol but not everyone had a liquor license in the front (also required).
Anyway, He sucked. Despite us being busy all the time he couldn't pay people right, or follow proper law, or even keep staff for long.
Soon some complaints about super from former employees got to court and the feds came chasing after him, the owner closes, gives the fourteen staff who worked and cared about the place that the Caffe was gonna shut on the 7th of April… He told us on the 1st.
He closes, declares bankruptcy, and disappears in a pit of depression and failure, not even signing employment seperation certificates that are required to get on welfare between jobs. Nobody's getting the probably hundreds of thousands of super he stole, cause he's called bankruptcy. Just a huge firm fuck you ball drop at all the dedicated staff.
These small businesses are easy to pity lots of the time, and getting involved with them can feel like a bit of community but it's just not worth it. They will fuck you out of either incompetence or sloth.
