Can a job require you to stay past your scheduled time?

My store is under new management. We close at 8:10, scheduled until 8:30. Everyone in store knows to maximize that 20 minutes and try to get out of there on time. Most of us have kids, and some of us (myself included) have a longer drive home. The new manager wants to hang around and piddle on the iPad and just do whatever until 8:40-8:45. Most of what he’s doing I believe could be done before we close the doors. My husband works nights, and has to leave 10 minutes after I get home when I leave on time. (We have a baby and one car, so he can’t leave before I get home) So I’m already in a hurry when I leave. I’ve informed the new manager of this. I feel that he will just start stretching the schedules until 8:45. In which case I would of course have…
