I am a restaurant manager that accepted a position at a new spot that’s currently under new management and about to reopen. I signed the offer letter and promptly sent in my resignation for my current position.
This was last week and I still have two more weeks before the official start day posted in the offer letter. However, today I received a phone call from my new bosses and they loosely implied they may need some help from me in the meantime. I let them know my schedule is essentially full until the start date they gave me. They said they have two other managerial candidates with more immediate availability they are considering bringing on, in addition to myself. I told them that wasn’t a bad idea as they want to be open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, with late night on weekends, so we need the coverage.
Later in the day I felt guilty so I offered to come in on a day off and meet with our Kitchen Manager to go over the menu. They said it wouldn’t be necessary. I offered to start sending them a cocktail list with wine and beer selection and they said they have it covered. I offered to sit in with them on some interviews they have coming up and they declined. I asked if there was anything else I could do in the meantime for them and they said they’d let me know.
Now my anxiety is kicking into hyperdrive thinking they’ve already replaced me. During my interview process they mentioned how much they wanted their new hire to be involved with the creation process behind the menu and the hiring process with all the staff. Earlier today they needed my input and now it sounds like they don’t need me at all. With two weeks left until my first day, I’m starting to wonder if I’ll even make it that far.
Can they actually let me go before I even start or am I just being paranoid? I quit a job I enjoyed to accept their offer and am worried it was all for nothing. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice would be appreciated!
