Can my job ask for my tips back?

At my job (I’m a barista at a coffee shop), we pull our tips from the cash register every shift change and disperse them throughout all of the baristas on the floor. Today, there was an issue with pulling the tips and the drawer ended up being short. My manager asked myself and three other baristas for a portion of our tips back the make up for it. I wanted to ask to see if I actually had to do that or if I could say no. This is in Texas btw
