I’m a casual employee in Australia working as a dental hygienist.
Being casual I can give 0 notice.
My current job has fucked me over so much. They promise me hours and days but then the days fall apart with patients cancelling. I get $40 an hour but they make me clock off if I don’t have a patient. They promise me all the time there will be more patients but my books are dying more and more. This week I only worked 4.5 hours.
Well I just had an interview for another job and got the position on the spot. It’s a busy practice with multiple hygienists and still they are fully booked until September already. They want me to start immediately — I’m going in to observe on Friday afternoon and then work on Saturday! The pay is $45 an hour and on Saturdays $55 an hour (time and a half with the award rate). The hours are set, stable, guaranteed, no clocking off if a patient doesn’t come. It is perfect for me for a number of reasons too like one of my colleagues was a tutor at my uni and will be able to help mentor me blah blah.
So I went to my old job today and asked for a copy of my contract. I specifically remember signing a document that had all the rules like no mobile phones and also no USBs could be brought to work or plugged in (previous employee once downloaded all the patient data and poached them to a new clinic lol).
I told them I need the contract because a bank needed it for a loan (not getting a loan but just made up a lie to not seem suspicious). The practice manager (who is bitchy to me at times) said there is no contract. I told her the document I signed and she was like “that was just an employee privacy thing no that’s not a contract”. Well now I have no idea if there’s some clause in there about how much notice I need to give but fuck it.
Anyway she was showing me how oh my god they’ve booked almost a full day for Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s it. Not even 2 solid days.
Fuck them.
Part of me feels guilty knowing these patients are going to moved around and cancelled because they won’t find a new hygienist easily (shortage right now).
So here is my draft letter what do you think?
Dear __
As I was driving home I was literally just offered a new job which I will be accepting. Therefore I will only be available to work Monday’s from now on. Alternatively I am happy to resign completely if needed.
I have had to accept this job because I need more hours and more job stability. I love the clinic and staff here but I simply need more work.
I am starting my new job on Saturday and then Tuesday onwards so will not be available. I apologise for the inconvenience of having to cancel and move patients but I cannot risk coming in and having the day fall apart when the other job is secure with books full until September.
