Nobody is suggesting going back to bartering or anything like that.
This book does a very good job of breaking down what a Socialist economy could look like and if you are legit looking to try to understand us weirdo lefties I suggest giving it a read.

Marx himself theorized that Capitalism is a necessary step in achieving Socialism. Some of us think that time has passed, some of us think we still need to build to it. But for us to even remotely achieve our “utopian society” we first need to discuss it, and dismissing that theorizing as “not living in reality” is childish.
We’re all living in reality, that’s why we oppose it. If you tell us it can never happen you sound as foolish as an evangelical claiming evolution doesn’t exist because “Apes aren’t evolving into people today are they?”
Whenever someone tries to tell us that “Capitalism is just the way things are,” you are aware it’s still fairly new in human history right? I’ve rarely seen anyone flat out claim that Capitalism is good for everyone, so for anyone dismissing people discussing and calling for a better system, do you really think it’s working so well for us it’s going to be the economic system for humans until the end of time?
At least we dream about real freedom and utopia. The Capitalists might own or rent your bodies but they do not own your mind. If you’re working class, there’s no reason to defend it anonymously to strangers online. Your boss isn’t watching and much like all the hard work you do for them, it isn’t going to get you a promotion or a raise.
