Cashing in stocks and stock options from start up company from over 20 years ago?

After graduating college, I worked for a small biotech start up in 1998 – 1999. When I was released from the company I signed various documents and I was given shares of stock and stock options. I remember something about 50,000 shares so it's a lot. I have since lost those documents, but the company should still have records of that. If they gave an employee shares of stock, they can't just take that away right? I would like to email the company and ask for those documents and possibly cash in whatever I could. How should I ask for all of that?
