Co-workers asked to switch to salary to “help out” the company.

My employer is asking at least a few of my coworkers to switch from hourly to salary. I overheard one manager say it was temporary to help them with labor costs. I should probably mind my own business, these coworkers feel like they are being fairly compensated. It just seems like a huge red flag and I’m assuming they are being taken advantage of. I am confused on if they would be actually exempt from overtime? This is a restaurant (US, MT). Two of them are not managers, line cook and server.
