I’m trying to figure out what to do.
I was sent on a business trip when I worked for a company. I rented a vehicle through Hertz using the company’s travel agency.
When I returned from the trip, I was laid off.
Yesterday, 3 weeks later, I get a call from Hertz regarding a Vehicle Incident Report.
Apparently, when I returned the vehicle there was new damage. I wasn’t given a walkthrough with an agent when I rented and didn’t see any damage when I took the car. There weren’t any incidents while I was driving, and my coworker who was with me can attest to that. I’m assuming someone backed in to me when the car was parked or something and left a scrape. Can’t explain it otherwise.
Well, apparently Hertz has been trying to get in touch with my former employer for 3 weeks and hasn’t had any response. There are 2 documented emails in the attachments Hertz emailed me.
Hertz is saying that as the named driver, I’m ultimately responsible.
My former employer should have insurance that covered all travel liability. I declined coverage through Hertz because of this. I don’t understand why my former employer isn’t responding to me or Hertz.
I think they were probably insured by the company that provided an equipment COI I needed for that last job, so I called the rental house asking for the name of the insurance company that issued it. They’re emailing it to me and I’m gonna call them. After that, I’m out of ideas.
Ugh, any advice??
