There have been some posts here that go along the lines of “how do you people in America live?” or “why don't you just unionize?” Nothing new, not necessarily more prevalent now than in the past, but I've just seen a few recently that put this issue on my mind.
If someone from America, or anywhere without socialized health care or strong labor laws, is on this sub, they are likely very aware of the many structural issues most people in their country live under that keep them from living as comfortably as those in some other countries.
You will not find an American here who isn't longing for socialized healthcare so they can be free of the oppressive expense it burdens them with, or just their lack of care at all. You will not find anyone in here who doesn't want to be in a union if they must work.
But it's not so easy to move to Europe (especially with their immigration track record), it's even less easy to have any effect on our political reality, and it's often a life-altering risk to make open efforts to unionize if one needs to stay employed for the foreseeable future to maintain a roof over their heads and food on their plate, as that can lead to immediate and legally-enforcable firing.
Let's also not forget that for all the socialized medicine, labor laws, environmental protections, or whatever else more social-democratic countries may have, they still are capitalist countries which benefit from the exploitation of workers worldwide, of the protection of the landowners, of wars for oil, of the destruction of the environment, and so on and so forth.
Social democracy is a concession to the working class to accept capitalism, and these types of posts could just as easily be retorted with a “how do you all live while property exists?” or “why don't you just collectivize your industry right now?” by some person living on a commune somewhere in Seattle. That questioning just serves to invalidate the efforts people are actually making to enact change against bad odds and high risks.
Venting is fine, but venting on behalf of others as if they don't know that they should be venting is just kinda salt in the wound.
