coworker getting paid 6 figures and doing nothing

Been at my office job for a year. A coworker started around the time I did. Coworker has worked total of 3 months of last year. 3 months off fmla, 8 weeks vacation, regularly calls in sick with a variety of excuses (none related to fmla reason) and schedules about 8 -12 hours worth of appointments during working hours for self and kid he only has every other weekend. Multiple people have complained to boss about coworker inappropriate behavior, usually aggressively telling people off. We've lost business because coworker refuses to attend meetings (all remote). Boss tried multiple times to make coworker attend meetings. Coworker started attending meetings from his phone (after a year…) even meetings where there's no point in attending if u can't see the screen. The rest of the team has had to complete all his projects because he doesn't do anything. Coworker complained that workload is too big so 50% of assigned clients were distributed to the rest of us. Now we're all overloaded.

Coworker is making 6 figures. I wish I had gone to HR about everything instead of my boss. Everyone is pissed off about coworker. Everyone has believed from beginning coworker is hustling us. He's gotten himself in a position where he has no work, no consequences and unlimited time off. Ik coworker is extremely mentally ill as illustrated by aggressive, inappropriate behavior plus coworker told me about mental health issues himself.

Is there anything illegal going on here? Next direct issue I'm going to HR but other than that I'm thinking about leaving. One toxic person has poisoned the whole group and I don't enjoy working there anymore, plus I'm losing respect for my boss. I have had a heart to heart w my boss and told him I think you're being manipulated.

I've seen other people play their job like this and it's always the same pattern.

Any advice? Should I just leave? It's so unfair and I'm overloaded while coworker is basically working part time.
