I’ve worked at this outdoor company for 3 years getting paid shit hourly because I genuinely used to love working here. But the more time goes on the more authoritative this company gets.
So this weekend we’re having a festival that brings in more guests that July 4th, and no surprise, there’s no staff parking.
We have a designated overflow lot that’s right off campus that takes a few minutes to walk from. We also have a clock-in app that lets you clock in when you’re within range (on campus).
So my plan was to drive on campus, clock in, then drive to and park in the overflow lot. But to get on campus you have to pass the parking guy, so I pull up and roll my window down, tell him I’m just turning around and he’s like
“why?” So I said
“oh I’m workin I’m just clocking in then turning around to park in the overflow lot”
and he’s like
“you’re not allowed to do that” and I just go
“what?” And he says
“you can’t clock in unless you’re working” and I said
“I’m on campus, at work” and he was still saying “no” and I just snapped at him and said
“okay I’m turning around”
pulled a u-ey and clocked my ass in.
Told my coworker about this and she agreed with the Parking Guy- she’s on salary so her opinion holds no weight.
TL;DR
Company asks Me (the employee) to do something (park off campus and walk to my work station) and doesn’t want to pay me for it
I know this seems small, and that Parking Guy was probably acting “on principle,” but that principle is exploitation of the employee. If my employer forces me to do something, I’m getting paid- even if it’s only realistically $2
