I work retail and it's part time. They're getting busier during Christmas and expect me to be there without fail during my work schedule, so calling out sick may get you written up during what's known as 'blackout' months, which are the holiday months of Black Friday and Christmas. If an employee calls in sick, has bad menstrual cramps and has to leave early they can get written up during the busy season. If we don't greet customers enough, we can get written up or even punished by being made to clean restrooms even though we already have a janitor and it's not in our job description. I told them I needed to take days off because I had found a second job because my part time hours weren't enough for me and they said 'we'll have to check and see'. This job doesn't allow more than part time for any of it's workers or benefits either. A lot of people think that part time should be better because it's less hours, but they act entitled to your time even if they know you can't even afford to work there. I'm about to quit and either go back to school or do freelance because I'm so disillusioned by job culture.
