Does the current business model corrupt owners?

The title causes a bit of a knee-jerk reaction for sure, but I'd love to hear if anyone else gets this vibe. I have worked a while now in several industries. Some shorter, some longer, some trades. Even a few start-ups that were getting their feet under them. And it felt like the more these higher-ups got into 'business', the more detached they became with everything else. Heck, they might even be fine to have a beer with, but once in a meeting or behind closed doors, they changed. Or, at least, appeared to. Currently I work for a casual trade gig. It's not terrible and it pays the bills. But the owner feels absolutely bi-polar. One week he will talk about the importance of mental health, managing stress, etc, then the following week turns into a tyrant with zero emotions and squeezes everyone into micro-managed stress balls complete with…

Are there any actual functioning owners, upper managers out there? Or do they all suffer this descent into emotionless whip-crackers that assume the worst about everyone?
