Dollar General giving me the runaround on my employment(long post ahead)

Hi guys, so I am currently employed with Popshelf(a Dollar General company) and the experience so far has been extremely odd and a bit frustrating. I noticed they were hiring last year. I put in an application and got called somewhere else so I didnt think about the application, and I worked at that place for about a year. Fast forward to this year, I decided to try again. I went in because I saw they were still hiring on Glassdoor for my location with several positions open. I decided to do the basic entry level associate position. I went in on the Friday before mothers day and asked about the position and if the one I applied for was still available. One of the managers was there and she told me that she was doing open interviews Monday so I needed to call her on Monday. I did, and…

I did, and she told me that I could come in for an interview on Tuesday. I went in, did the interview and it seemed to go really well. She showed me around and went over some basic things, like the layout of the store and such, so I was pretty confident. She told me that the store would contact me for a second interview in a couple days. I said ok and I believe it was around Wednesday that they called me to come in the next day for the second interview. Again, cool. Its a week later and its never taken me this long to even get basic interviews for an entry level retail job, but its cool Im pretty patient. So I come in around 10 am Thursday, and another manager gives me a second interview. Again, shes super sweet, everyone Ive talked to is very nice, no bad vibes or attitudes or anything. It takes about 10-15 minutes. She tells me she thinks Id be a great fit for the location. I am pretty confident I got the job at this point. She tells me the store manager will contact me in a few days with information and that she'd like to offer me the position, and told me the wage she wanted to offer me. Im like ok cool. I wait a couple days, and on Saturday I get the hiring packets. Ive had several retail jobs and this was the first time I did all the hiring paperwork online vs doing it in store as part of training. So I fill most of it out but get stuck on the W4 part. I've never done a W4, and I have a tax preparer who does most of the work. But it keeps asking me if I want my taxes withheld or not. Im kinda confused on whether it was asking me to opt out, or in. Again, Ive never been asked anywhere whether or not I want my taxes to be withheld or not as its always just been a given that taxes would be taken out of my paycheck as normal. So its Saturday and my tax preparer is not in because they're closed. I dont want to mess anything up or have the IRS come after me, so I call the store seeing if I can get information on how to fill it out because I wasnt even sure whether it was asking me to opt in or out. The store manager answers and he says he cant discuss anything with me and that its not legal. So Im sitting here, with no one to help me, but I still have to push through and fill everything out. My dad calls his secretary and she didnt know either, and she just tells me to fill it out if its mandatory. So I hope I did this right but I still have no way of knowing. Anyway so after I submit everything, it says its complete and I can submit the whole application. A few more days go by with no notification or anything, through email or phone. So I call on the NEXT Wednesday. The store manager answers and tells me my background information still hasnt come in yet? Its been almost a week. Again, Im patient but sheesh I've never had this problem anywhere ever and Ive had several retail jobs, both entry level and managerial. They tell me they have to do the schedule for the week and they'd let me know. So I say ok, and at this point, I definitely should have looked elsewhere because this is getting ridiculous, but I didnt want to just ghost because I dont do that and I need money rn and it was afaIk, a guarantee. But it shouldnt take weeks to even simply be hired to a basic retail position. I have no criminal background, no history of any issues that should cause a problem with my background checks or anything. Thursday I am called to bring in IDs for the I9 to be completed and submitted to the store manager, so I do. The next day, the manager who gave me the second interview called and told me I could come in and start on Saturday and Sunday. She let me know I wasnt officially in the system yet, and that I would have to clock in and out manually on the sheet of paper that tells the hours and designated areas for each employee for the day. The hours are the same for both days. Im excited about actually being able to work and get in, even if I cant do anything involving the register/money because Im not in the system yet. No big deal, I can learn how to do everything else. So I work my two days, and on Sunday I inquire about whether or not Im scheduled for another day this week or if I need to wait for a call or whatever. Again, everyone I worked with was super kind, no bad vibes or anything. The manager I close with on Sunday tells me she'll contact the managers on group chat and see for me. I say ok and I go home expecting to be told the next day if I have any more days. Today I wake up with no text or call or anything. Ok…So I have to call again. Im not trying to be annoying, but I really dont want to be unprepared for a call where Im asked to come in at last minute the day of. I hate that. So the manager who did my first interview answers, she tells me to call back in 30 minutes because shes with customers. I wait 30 minutes and call again. She takes about 10 minutes to look, comes back and tells me Im good for the day, but because Im not in the system and dont have a login yet, I cant do the DG app which has my schedule on it and they may have to “write me in”. So I need to call back tomorrow just to see if I even have any other days this week. Im getting extremely frustrated. Its almost been a month since my interview and subsequent hiring. How long does this all take? Is this normal or am I just wasting my time? I shouldnt have to call every day just to see if I need to come in or not. I hate to ghost. Thats not my style. I dont even like quitting jobs at all because I have a pretty good work ethic and am willing to do what the job entails, always have perfect attendance etc and usually only leave due to changes in management or to find something with better pay. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I just stop calling, not answer their calls and just find something else?
