Don’t let a company who prides itself in diversity fool you like it did with me.

For the past year I have been working on a project that has changed the company I work at and has created tremendous value for it. I came up with the proposal, presented it to the executives, and have built the entire infrastructure of this project from the ground up. It has positively impacted both our customers and anyone who works with the company. I have a lazy manager who doesn’t like to do any work, they just like to sit around and go into our work slack channels to talk about their pets or a recipe they tried. Half the time, they’re not even showing they’re online. They barely even touched this project or managed the people working on it. I have the proof for all this, too.

Guess who is getting all the clout and praise from everyone?

I thought, maybe if I work hard and show my worth I could get really far. I was wrong. My non-POC female manager reaped the benefits from my work. They got all the praise, the pay increases, their name plastered on any public facing announcement that has been made. But it’s my work and my ideas that they’re taking credit for. I’ve been dealing with discrimination as an woman of color (with a disability) my entire life. I have had this happen to me at several employers in the past.

I’m sick of it. I am reevaluating my entire career and thinking about where I want to go next. I’m tired of discrimination and dealing with people’s biases. I’m tired of my white managers taking credit for all my ideas and all my work. It’s time for a change.

TLDR: I created an initiative that impacted the entire company I work for but my non-POC manager stole the spotlight got all the credit (including the raise) from me.
